Fixing a draining spa, heating problems and poor circulation
A newly built pool and raised spa in Bokarina had three frustrating problems: the spa drained down, the heating wasn’t working properly, and poor circulation was allowing algae to develop. Several problems appeared soon after the pool and spa were completed:
The raised spa lost water whenever the circulation pump switched off.
Restricted water flow prevented the heating system from working properly.
Poor circulation through the pool, spa and water-feature area created dead spots where algae had begun to grow.
After the owner was unable to get the issues resolved through the original pool builder, they asked Clarity Pool Services to take over the pool’s maintenance and investigate.
The equipment enclosure was a real spaghetti junction: four pumps surrounded by tightly packed pipes, bends and valves. With pipework crossing at several levels, Matt needed to trace the full system to identify where water flow was being restricted.
Finding the Cause
Matt completed a full filtration and circulation diagnosis.
He found that a non-return valve was missing from the plumbing between the raised spa and the main pool. This valve allows water to flow in the intended direction while preventing it from flowing backwards. Without it, water from the elevated spa drained back into the pool whenever the circulation pump stopped.
Matt also discovered that several existing valves were incorrectly positioned. Some flow paths were closed when they needed to be open, restricting circulation and preventing adequate water flow from reaching the heating system.
Repairing the System
Matt installed the missing non-return valve and adjusted the existing valves to establish the correct flow through the pool, raised spa, filtration system and heating equipment.
Following these changes:
The spa retained its water when the circulation system switched off.
The spa circulated and overflowed into the pool correctly during filtration.
Adequate water flow reached the heating system, allowing it to operate properly.
Improving Pool Circulation
The plumbing configuration was only part of the problem. The pool, spa and water-feature return nozzles were pointing in inconsistent directions, leaving some areas with little water movement.
Matt repositioned the nozzles to create a consistent anticlockwise circulation pattern. This improved water movement through the areas where algae had begun to develop and helped clear the algae.
The Result
All diagnostic and corrective work was completed in one visit.
The spa stopped draining down, the heating worked properly, and circulation improved throughout the pool and spa. The owner could finally enjoy the new pool with the plumbing and equipment operating as intended.
