OUTCOMEThe Problem
When Clarity Pool Services first attended this older approximately 50,000-litre vinyl-lined pool in Wurtulla, several interconnected problems were making it increasingly difficult to maintain.
The pool structure had begun to settle at one end, leaving the waterline visibly uneven. The ageing liner had developed several leaks, the pool had experienced recurring water-quality problems, and the original filtration arrangement was no longer working reliably.
Rather than undertake a complete pool reconstruction, the owner wanted to preserve the existing pool for as long as it remained practical and safe to operate.
An unusual and ageing filtration system
One of the most unusual features was the original cartridge filter, which had been installed inside the pool’s skimmer box. This older configuration relied on underground pipework running between the skimmer and the equipment area.
A leak had developed somewhere along that underground suction line. Continuing to use the original arrangement would have meant ongoing water loss and potentially extensive excavation without any certainty that the rest of the ageing system would remain reliable.
Bypassing the leaking underground line
Matt sealed the original skimmer opening and bypassed the leaking underground suction system.
New intake pipework was run above ground from the pool to the equipment area. An inline leaf basket was incorporated into the suction line, performing the debris-catching function previously provided by the skimmer basket while also connecting to the pool cleaner.
This practical redesign removed the leaking underground section from operation and created a filtration route that could be inspected, maintained and repaired much more easily.
Upgrading the filtration equipment
The old skimmer-mounted cartridge filter was replaced with a conventional 25-inch sand filter in the equipment shed. A replacement pool pump was also installed when the previous pump reached the end of its serviceable life.
The original chlorinator is no longer operating, so chlorine is currently added manually as part of the pool’s ongoing care.
Specialist leak detection also identified several holes in the vinyl liner, which were patched to reduce water loss and keep the pool operational.
This has not been a single repair. Clarity has supported the pool through a series of practical interventions, including:
recovering the pool after it had turned green;
addressing problems around the original skimmer and filtration arrangement;
repairing equipment leaks;
arranging specialist repairs to the vinyl liner;
bypassing the leaking underground suction line;
installing an above-ground intake and inline basket;
replacing the old filtration system with a sand filter; and
installing a replacement pool pump.
A staged approach over several years
The Result
The pool remains fully usable, with clear water and a filtration system that can be serviced using readily accessible equipment.
The work does not reverse the age or settlement of the original pool structure. Instead, it demonstrates how careful diagnosis and staged repairs can sometimes extend the useful life of an older pool when complete reconstruction is not the owner’s preferred option.
For this Wurtulla homeowner, that has meant continuing to use the existing pool while avoiding a major reconstruction project.
